A sunflower-bright wedding at Packington Moor in Staffordshire

Hazel and Charles filled their countryside celebration with handmade details

Hazel Mitchell, a vet, and Charles Robinson, a forestry consultant, both 26, held their civil ceremony and reception at Packington Moor, in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Budget: £20,000-£25,000

Flower budget: £1,000-£1,500

I would love to say that it was truly love at first sight across a beautiful venue of some sort for us, but that would be a lie. In reality, our universities had hosted a joint social and we met in a nightclub, where Charles was busting his somewhat unorthodox moves on the dance floor!

We both love the countryside and the rustic look, so it seemed like the perfect theme for us. I wanted to get married near our home if possible, and Charles wanted somewhere which had plenty of trees and nice grounds. Packington Moor ticked all the boxes, with its mini wood and being based close to home.

Sunflowers were our predominant flower. They have always been my favourite bloom since I was little. They have such a happy, relaxed and rustic vibe to them, as well as being so beautiful. I wanted to try and
combine these with a hint of a more classic look, so we added in some white roses.

My florist completely got what I was looking for and created gorgeous arrangements – the flowers and venue complemented each other perfectly. I think if done correctly, the flowers can really set the tone of a wedding.

Our favours were very special. Our table names were different tree species, so we decided to grow each of the trees and plant them in a little pot. Every guest received a sapling of the tree that their table was named after. It was hard work planting so many seeds in order to get enough, but they looked amazing and the guests loved it. And they all still have their trees today!

A lot of our day was handmade by us. Charles made a rustic chest for the cards out of old pallets, as well as the frames for the table plan and menus. Our tree slice centrepieces were from a tree that had fallen down in Charles’ dad’s garden, which we also turned into a few signs by painting with chalkboard paint.

Although not a classic personal touch, it has to be mentioned that my father is a helicopter pilot and someone he works for kindly lent him his helicopter for the day. My dad organised for a family friend to bring it to the field by my house the morning of the wedding, and my dad flew me to the venue! It was incredible and such a special moment.

We kicked off the evening with a barn dance, so the dance floor was full from the start! It was a great way for everyone to mingle and to relax – by the time the DJ started everyone already knew each other.

My tip for brides-to-be: Enjoy it all! Yes, there will be stressful moments, but if you start early and don’t leave it to the last minute, you can enjoy every aspect of the planning. On the day itself, stay with your husband – it’s so easy to get separated as you mingle, but we made a big effort not to let that happen and it made the day even better.

Steal their style!
