Hen party review: Marlin Apartments

Hen party review: Marlin Apartments

Written by Katie Byrne

Planning a London-based hen? This trendy apartment will make the perfect base for your celebration...

Hen weekends are the most fun way to travel with girlfriends – especially if you treat it as a proper getaway, with a brilliant venue to start off your sophisticated partying. And like us, you might even add in a naked butler or two, some sashes and L plates as we did for my sister’s send off in June. Hens seeking to indulge themselves on a weekend jaunt to London will be thrilled to know, how after lots of research and managing varying budgets, I came across the perfect base for us all - The Marlin Apartments, Aldgate, London. The apartments are classy and modern, and come without the frills of a restaurant and leisure facilities so the price was incredibly affordable for everyone too – well put it this way: there was more in the kitty for champagne and taxis!

There are six of us in an apartment and we really appreciated not just the central London location of the brand spanking new apartments, but the proximity to Aldgate Train station and Shoreditch where on our last day (a Sunday) we were able to soothe our sore heads and refresh our bodies with a walk around Columbia Road Flower market then Spitalfields Market before stopping off at various cool food trucks for lunch.

Our apartment is located on the main road, although the entrance is discreet, it’s easy to find and there is plenty of parking too which you can reserve upon booking. The apartment we are in is high up off street level, so noise isn’t an issue and we have a sprawling balcony which, on the Friday night is the perfect communal area for catching up over manicures and pedicures and outdoor express massages courtesy of at home beauty company Return to Glory. I mean, here we are, getting beautified whilst watching the sun set over London. It’s perfect. Better for our needs than any swanky rooftop bar because we can see The Gherkin and Canary Wharf and did I mention we have a super cute, highly intelligent and very-nearly naked butler as our host?

Inside, the apartments are immaculate, and awash with classic contemporary décor – the perfect setting for our glamorous themed weekend in London. There is nothing stereotypical about the rooms either, they are awash with sunlight from big windows, kind sized beds (which can be made into twins), luxury cotton bedding and big fluffy white towels and funky paintings on the walls. There are LCD flat screens in both rooms as well as the living/ dining room area which also houses a DVD player and big airy wardrobes too.

There are two well planned bathrooms with enough space for two ladies to get fully made-up at the same time – we were never fighting for mirror space in our attempts to get ready for the main dinner and party evening on Saturday night. Plus, everyone loves a take-home gift, and there were plenty of luxury L’Occitane toiletries for us all.

The living room is spacious for our hot butler to not just serve us lots of champagne sushi and pizza (I know… I did a varied shop to cater for all tastes!)

But also to kick start the fabulous fun games and wedding talk. You can have breakfast and dinner packages arranged by the apartments or food ordered from local restaurants if you want to cut out all the hassle of catering entirely and wifi meant we had easy access to the internet too.

The kitchen is fully equipped for long and short stay guests with a much needed dishwasher, microwave, kettle, crockery, large fridge and freezer and full hob.

Upon arrival we are greeted by friendly reception staff and a concierge who helps us with our mountainous luggage. The facilities are great – ironing board, iron, hairdryer, radio alarm clocks and a safe – everything you’d want and expect from a home from home.

All the apartments are non-smoking with check-in from 3pm and late check out is available until 1pm too. We didn’t do the main ‘partying’ at the apartments – they are not really marketed for that – but we had the perfect base to sleep, get ready, have snacks and on the Friday night, a wonderful girly pampering evening indoors to kick start the brilliant, but manic weekend ahead.

Wedding magazine readers can benefit from an exclusive advanced purchase rates when booking at least four weeks ahead and receiving a 20% per cent discount off the best available rate. Prices as of time of writing start from £100 a night for a one bedroom apartment. Visit www.marlinapartments.com for more information.
