Wedding interviews Nova from Nu Bride
How do you feel to have won Best Big-Day Inspiration tonight?
I'm thrilled and very overwhelmed! I'm absolutely thrilled with the acknowledgement which means more than you could realise.
What was the reason behind starting your blog?
Once I was engaged I quickly absorbed myself into wedding pretty, and found there was very little representation for black women and black brides. It reminded me of when I was a young girl and loved old Disney cartoons. All the princesses were Snow White, Cinderella etc. (we hadn't quite got into Princess Tiana and Jasmine yet), and there was nothing that spoke to me. I felt that I couldn't be a princess, just because there was nobody that looked like me. And when I went into the wedding industry I felt exactly the same, so I started Nu Bride to showcase a bit more diversity, encourage a bit more inclusivity and to just get people thinking about it.
What has been your favourite wedding trend so far?
I love metallics on cakes – it's all about adding texture and colour to your wedding cake. And it's the same for linens as well, metallic sequinned linens are coming thick and fast and have been in the US for a while now, but I think we're finally catching on! I'm a total shoe girl too, so I definitely think you should add personality to your shoes!
How would you describe your blog in three words?
Fun, inspirational and stylish.
Where do you find inspiration for your posts?
Anywhere: TV, film, the Oscars, wedding shows, talking to people, and just life – weddings are about life and we forget that sometimes.
Which element of your blog are you most proud of?
The element that touches people – the deeper message. The message about validating women. Helping young girls and women validate how they look regardless of their skin colour, background, height, or their weight. Just encouraging diversity and beauty.
