A traditional wedding at Blake Hall in Essex, with a beautiful pastel colour palette

A traditional wedding at Blake Hall in Essex, with a beautiful pastel colour palette

Written by Katie Byrne

Joanne and Paul chose a countryside barn for their classic nuptials...

Joanne, 31, a primary school teacher, and Paul, 29, a consultant, married at All Saints church, Warley, followed by a reception at Blake Hall in Ongar, Essex.

The atmosphere...

We wanted an elegant theme, so we chose lace and pearl details to decorate our countryside venue. We instantly fell in love with Blake Hall and its manicured walled gardens.

The restored 17th century barn, which still boasts original features, provided the perfect backdrop for our vintage-inspired style. We placed old family wedding photos on the gift table, which stood alongside a twisted willow arrangement where guests could hang handwritten notes.

The look...

For my dress, I was inspired by my mum’s lace wedding gown which she wore 35 years ago. As a result, I chose a strapless lace number with a matching jacket.

My bouquet, comprising pale pink peonies, ‘Sweet Avalanche’ and ‘Juliet’ David Austin roses, stocks, astilbe, bupleurum and gypsophila, also featured a special photo charm of my nan on her wedding day.

My bridesmaids wore lilac dresses with pearl earrings and held bouquets of gypsophila, while my flowergirls wore adorable cream lace dresses with pearl headbands. Paul looked handsome in his grey morning suit.

The details...

To set the scene, we hung a heart-shaped wreath behind the top table, and for our table décor, we had a collection of vintage glass vases filled with flowers. Our tablecentres were crystal cake stands adorned with the same blooms used in my bouquet, but with additional pink hydrangeas.

Our cake was decorated with both sugar roses and fresh flowers – and, to tie in with our country style, we gave our guests fabric heart favours.

My favourite moment...

I loved dancing along to our band and listening to my dad and Paul’s heartfelt speeches.

My tip for brides-to-be...

Spend time researching and investing in a great photographer – after all the hard work and planning, it’s so important to be able to look back on your wonderful day.
