A night with Nu Bride

A night with Nu Bride

Written by Emma Vince

We spend the evening with Nova Reid, editor of award-winning wedding blog Nu Bride

"Little girls all have their fairytale dreams;

they need to see that there is diversity in beauty"

- Nova, Nu Bride

It's no secret that here at Wedding Magazine, we're big fans of Nu Bride, a wedding blog which celebrates the beauty of weddings with a splash of diversity. Editor Nova Reid blew everyone away with her moving acceptance speech after scooping best big-day inspiration at our annual blog awards last year – so we were excited to attend A Night With Nu Bride, to support the lovely Nova, and the message of inclusive beauty she stands for.

Set in the Benjamin Franklin room of the RSA, the event was kitted out in serious style thanks to Nova's friends and colleagues in the industry: red mood lighting by Light Motif, a display of delicious cakes by Elizabeth's Cake Emporium, beautiful blooms by the awesome team at Amie Bone Flowers and lively music by the guys at I Can Create. On-the-day styling was provided by Jemma-Jade Events.

The event was packed with industry experts, from top designers like Ian Stuart and Phillipa Lepley to other influential bloggers and vendors.

While mingling with glasses of bubbly and delicious canapés in hand was great fun, there was a real takeaway message from the evening, one which is close to Nova's heart, and one which the wedding industry can't hear enough times.

Nova promotes diversity in beauty, and to have this beauty recognised in the bridal world visually, whether that be through magazines, blogs, brochures or advertising. Nova has no need for cue cards as when she speaks it comes from the heart, from her own experiences growing up, and how she felt as a bride-to-be.

“The need for acceptance and ultimately, validation, starts when we are children,” says Nova. It’s a human condition and it is important. But it is so hard to feel validated when you are not visually represented in an inclusive way. I ask everyone in a position of power in the wedding industry just to consider how to be more inclusive when they market their brands. Little girls all have their fairy-tale dreams, they need to ‘see’ that there is diversity in beauty; it is up to us to inspire a generation and educate them and to be inspired to be better.”

Thank you Nova for such a wonderful, poignant, evening. You can watch coverage from the evening below in a video by Urban Cinematography
