How to look after a diamond engagement ring

How to look after a diamond engagement ring

Written by Katie Byrne

The traditional rock of choice, here's how to keep your diamond in tip-top sparkling condition...

To kick things off: if the ring is too big, get it resized!

Your engagement ring should sit comfortably on your wedding finger, without swivelling or knocking on other jewellery. If it doesn't, take it to a trusted jewellers ASAP to get it resized.

One of the best household cleaners for your ring?

Vodka! Leaving your ring in a glass of the spirit will restore some sparkle back to your rock - once you're satisfied, simply rinse it under warm water and dry with a cloth.

Don't use harsh household chemicals to clean your ring

They'll damage the metal and dull the sparkle - and if you've got a coloured stone (a ruby, for example), it can make the colour fade, too. If you're cleaning at home, remove your ring before coming into contact with such substances - even if you're wearing rubber gloves!

Be gentle when you pick your ring up

It sounds obvious, but be careful how you handle your ring. Pick it up by the band rather than by the rock, in order to minimise scuffing and smudging.

Watch out for loosening

Can you imagine anything worse than loosing the stone from your engagement ring? Diamonds can loosen over time, so make sure you check in with your jeweller if the rock position needs fixing.
