Wedding of the Year: choosing the dress

Wedding of the Year: choosing the dress

Written by Katie Byrne

Bride-to-be Nuala heads to Emma Hartley Bridalwear to find her perfect Enzoani wedding gown...

After finding out we had won Wedding of the Year and set a date for the wedding with Bijou, time started to fly by and before we knew it we were in August! I must admit I was feeling quite nervous when I was put in touch with Adam from Enzoani regarding the timescale for finding my dress, especially when he explained that their standard delivery would not normally be until December and out wedding was in October!

However, he soon located their closest stockist to me, Emma Hartley Bridalwear in Colne, Lancashire and liaised directly with them to ensure they had the widest range of stock available for my first appointment to choose my dress.

Emma Hartley Bridalwear is located on the main high street in Colne and was really easy to find, with free parking less than five minutes away. I arrived for my first appointment with my mum, and was greeted by the lovely Emma and Rachel, who explained which dresses I could pick from. I was definitely spoilt for choice and with a little help from my mum and Rachel, chose three dresses to try on.

They were all beautiful but the one I fell in love with instantly was the second dress I tried on. As I was stood in the changing room whilst Rachel tied the back up, I couldn’t stop smiling and even though the sample dress was a few sizes too big and definitely too long for me (being only 5ft 1”!), it felt so comfortable.

I walked out to show my mum and could tell by the look on her face that she thought it was ‘the one’ too. I had always thought I would like an A-line dress but definitely not strapless and had never really though much of satin before (even though Adrian had said he preferred the satin look to tulle/lace) – despite this though I thought it was perfect. I tried the third dress after but didn’t really spend so much time in it as I couldn’t wait to put the previous one back on – that’s how I knew it was right because I didn’t want to take it off!

When I put it back on I knew it had to be the one, but was just a little bit concerned about my arms being so exposed and also the time of year we were getting married and it potentially being a little cold. Rachel brought out a cape that had just come in a few days earlier from Enzoani’s 2016 collection and when I tried it on the dress just took on a whole load of extra wow factor! I loved the fact the dress had a long train to start with but with the cape extending the further, it just gave it even an even more dramatic look – I felt amazing!

Following my first appointment, Emma Hartley Bridalwear contacted me within a week to say that my dress had arrived with them and to book me in for my first fitting with their seamstress. In order to allow plenty of time for travel after work they booked me in for 7pm appointments, which meant that I didn’t have to take any extra time off work and arrived stress-free, post-commute.

The seamstress was great and not only made sure the dress fit perfectly, but gave me lots of top tips about how to walk on the day to avoid any trips or mishaps – it’s certainly quite daunting taking your first steps in a wedding dress – so much material to think about and not get caught in heels! Both of my dress fittings were just a week apart, which was perfect as by the second one there were only four weeks to go until the big day!

Emma Hartley Bridalwear then arranged to have the dress steamed and for me to pick it up the day before the wedding (which was perfect as I didn’t have to figure out where I was going to have to store it/hide it from Adrian!). I can’t thank both Emma Hartley Bridalwear and Enzoani enough for the assistance they gave me in choosing my dream dress and the gorgeous range I had to choose from – I felt a million dollars on the day!

Another aside to this was that the dress I actually ended up picking was the one that Adrian had said was his favourite after looking at the Enzoani website with me, when they were announced as the supplier during the competition. I didn’t know this when I tried it on, and had only picked it out because it was satin and actually said to my mum at the time “I best try this on so I can say it didn’t work on me” – seems he knows me better than I know myself!

It was at the end of my appointment when we were finalising all the paperwork I asked Rachel which one it was off the website and she showed me – it certainly confirmed to me I had made the right choice (in both the dress and Adrian!).
