Don't worry: there was a happy ending!
Now this is a cautionary tale for those of you who tend to remove your engagement and wedding rings in the bathroom.
Californian bride-to-be Carissa Wolter inadvertently flushed both her engagement ring and a pair of diamond earrings down the toilet after forgetting they were in a pile of tissues.
Ironically, Carissa had removed the jewellery in order to protect her six-month-old engagement ring while she cleaned her make-up brushes.
Talking to ABC News about the moment she realised she'd flushed the diamonds away, Carissa said: "I stood there in shock, like I wasn't sure if I really flushed it. Like, who flushes a ring down the toilet?"
She added to Buzzfeed Life: "I never thought I'd be so careless about something so valuable. When I realized what I had done, it seemed unreal". We can't even imagine!
When she told her fiancé, Kevin Winter, about the accident, he assured her it didn't matter as the ring was just a material object. However, Carissa was determined to try and get it back.
"I didn't know how I would get them back but I was detrermined to, even if I had to dig in the sewer myself," she explained. "My ring means too much to me to just let it go and give up so easily".
Kevin told KABC: "We started taking the toilet apart to see if it was still there, clearly it wasn't. It was a really scary feeling actually".
Carissa then had the idea to contact the local authorities for help - and in an amazing twist of luck, the Jurupa Community Services were able to find the ring and the earrings.
A relieved Kevin said: "To have it back on her finger is pricelss. It was just amazing".
