The do's (and don'ts!) of beautiful hair

The do's (and don'ts!) of beautiful hair

Written by Katie Byrne

Stylist to the stars Ben Cooke - whose clients include Leona Lewis, Amanda Holden and Victoria Beckham - has shared his top 10 do's and don'ts for guaranteeing beautiful hair on your big day. Read on to find out more!

DO
always choose the dress first before deciding on a hair style! If your dress has lots of detail then your hair needs to be very simple. And vice versa, a simple dress leaves room for a detailed hair style.

DON'T get your hair cut right before your big day. If your hair needs cutting then get it done around two weeks before the big day so it has the chance to set in.

DO try to have your consultation with a hair stylist about six months before the wedding. He or she will need to investigate styles that suit the shape of your face and incorporate a head piece if you are opting for one.

DON'T make any drastic changes to your hair. If you do decide to opt for a new colour then make sure you choose it well in advance. That way if you don’t like it, you still have time to change it.

DO protect your hair from the inside-out. Try to drink at least two litres of water a day and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to improve the overall health of your hair. Also try to stay away from oily foods as these can make your hair greasy.

DON'T wash your hair on the day of the wedding. Hair that is over conditioned or too fine never styles very well. However if you tend to have dry hair then deep-conditioning treatments can be used 3-4 days before.

DO take into consideration the type of wedding you are having as it can also have an impact on your hairstyle. If it’s a grand wedding an up-do style would portray a more formal, evening look. Loose styles are better for more informal weddings, beach weddings for example.

DON'T assume your usual hairdresser will be best for your wedding. Do your research or get recommendations from recently married friends.

DO make sure than when choosing your hairstyle you go for something that is resilient and long-lasting. Remember, it needs to survive the whole day and evening as well as look great in photographs.

DON'T choose a style that is too fashionable. Trends come in and out all the time and whilst it might look good on the day, the photographs might suggest otherwise in ten years time! A classic look is always best.
