What made me choose my wedding dress, by 17 real-life brides

What made me choose my wedding dress, by 17 real-life brides

Written by Katie Byrne

These brides reveal how they knew their big-day gown was The One...

"I’d always had a clear vision for my dress: strapless with a full tulle skirt that was classic and pretty – a gown I would still love 30 years down the line." - Rebecca

Abby Jiu

"I loved my Eden dress by Jenny Packham. Like many brides, I started out knowing what I didn't want but less sure about what I did want! Eden was actually the 10th dress I tried on and I instantly fell for it; I loved its elegant shape and subtle 1920s style with beautiful lace and bead embellishments." - Hannah

"I designed my dress myself with Shanna Melville after finding it difficult to make a decision and thought it would be fun to start from scratch. I opted for a simple design with a low V-neck and back to tie in with my bridesmaids’ dresses. We added seed pearls to the cap sleeves and pearl buttons down the back to add interest." - Annie

"I tried on a number of dresses but kept going back to the same one by Ellis and was disappointed if I went into a dress shop and they didn't have it! As my dress featured subtle beading, I wanted to keep my jewellery simple, so I opted for a pair of diamond stud earrings." - Jo

"I loved the simplicity of my Jesus Peiro dress and, with our venue being pretty grand, I felt a strong silhouette was perfectly apt!" - Hannah

"My dress was custom-made by Tatyana Merenyuk. I found the designer on a wedding blog and visited her studio in Brooklyn, New York, where I fell head over heels in love with her designs. That my dress was customised, too, made it all the more special for me." - Alena

"My dress was Justin Alexander. The moment I put it on and noticed the fabulous train, I knew it was the one. I also loved that it had a detachable bolero." - Linzi

"I looked everywhere for my wedding dress but couldn't find what I was looking for. In the end I bought a Sassi Holford dress from High Society Bridal which - much to the sales assistant's horror - I cut in half! I then teamed it with a customised ivory silk shirt from Zara." - Steph

"It took me almost a year to find my dress! I tried a variety of styles, and in the end I chose a dreamy princess-style gown which I fell in love with as soon as I put it on. I removed some of the jewel embellishments and added a corset back to the bodice, and it was perfect." - Maria

"I’d first seen my Vera Wang dress back in 2011, so when Matt proposed, I was keen to track it down. I eventually found myself in Nordstrom’s bridal boutique, looking at a similar style. When I explained what I was looking for to the assistant, much to my surprise, she informed me that they were going to receive a sample of my dream dress the following week! It was the only gown I tried on and it fitted perfectly." - Rachel

 This Love Of Yours

"I tried on far too many dresses, I didn’t ever get the ‘this is the one’ feeling… But the Jesus Peiro gown I picked in the end was the only dress that I really felt I would be happy to walk down the aisle in." - Becky

"I loved it because it was delicate and ethereal, but still felt like a classic wedding dress without being over-structured or too fluffy." - Kim

"I tried on lots of dresses and although they were all lovely, they just didn't seem me. All the designs were strapless and I didn't feel comfortable, but as soon as I stepped into my Jenny Packham gown, I knew it was the dress." - Holly

"My Maggie Sottero dress featured a delicate lace overlay and Swarovski crystal beading. I loved its fitted shape and scalloped lace train; the style was timeless, and perfect for my shape." - Julie

"I always knew I wanted a 70s dress – I still have my mum’s dress which I adore, but sadly it doesn’t fit me, so I wanted to find something similar. That’s when I stumbled across my 70s dress one afternoon on Etsy. It was exactly how I imagined it – and for £80, it really was a bargain!" - Tasha

"My gown was handmade - I knew that I wanted to have something unique and a little quirky that would reflect my personality. I designed my dress with classic and chic in mind, and I knew I wanted a low back in a figure-accentuating style. I went with lace and long sleeves, and when I found my dressmaker and we got to work, it was the most amazing and rewarding feeling seeing all my sketches come to life!" - Vicky

"My Christina Woo dress suited my hippy, boho style. I loved its floral detailing and the polka-dot tulle skirt – perfect for dancing and twirling around in!" - Rebekah
