Four ways to make your wedding dress feel more comfortable

Four ways to make your wedding dress feel more comfortable

Written by Katie Byrne

Worried your gown might start to feel a little too tight, or begin to rub half-way through your big day? Here's what to do...

#1 Practice wearing it before the big day

This will make you aware of any potentially tricky issues, and give you an opportunity to work out how to deal with them. It's also a great way to get used to a floor-skimming skirt or a bulky bustle - meaning you should hopefully avoid any awkward trips as well as get used to navigating the four-foot of material attached to your derrière...

Make sure you... Try wearing the dress with your shoes - you'll want to break those in too. (Click here for more tips for making your wedding shoes more comfortable!)

#2 Pick the right underwear!

Nope: squeezing yourself into that skin-tight pair of control knickers you normally rely on when you wear your favourite LBD isn't practical in this situation, ladies. Rather, think sturdy, comfortable and practical - and save the sexy stuff for your wedding night.

Make sure you... If you have sensitive skin - and have picked a dress adorned with embellishment - invest in a slip and lingerie that can help shield your skin from any irritation.

#3 Get the most out of your fitting

Wear the lingerie and shoes you're planning to wear on your wedding day, to make sure everything fits and works together. Don't be afraid to speak up: if there's an element of your dress that is uncomfortable, be upfront with your seamstress and start looking into ways to fix the problem.

Make sure you... Check your dress will stay comfortably in place no matter what you do: whether you're sitting down, raising your arms, twerking on the dancefloor - you get the idea.

The things every bride should remember when shopping for her wedding dress

#4 Factor in the weather

Be considerate of the time of year you're marrying. Summer bride? Have a hand-held or mini electric fan to hand that can help you cool down - similarly, autumnal bride? The strong chances of rain mean you should be prepared to scoop up your train - or better yet, can it be detached for outdoor photos? Plan ahead and cover as many outcomes as possible.

Make sure you... Invest in a second cheaper, more lightweight dress if your wedding gown is too hot.
