A glorious castle wedding in Scotland

Maureen and Pieter picked natural details to enhance the wild beauty of their stunning venue


Maureen Watt and Pieter Graham tied the knot at Castle Culcreuch, in Fintry, Glasgow, on 17 June 2017.

Given we were getting married in Scotland we wanted to have a mix of the personal – we got married in the church connected to the school that Maureen and her six siblings went to, and the quintessentially Scottish – choosing a castle in the middle of the country that lots of the Londoners travelling up would love and would make for a stunning occasion and brilliant imagery.

We wanted a very natural styling to suit the aesthetic of an old Scottish castle. With that in mind we chose wild flowers as the bouquets and eucalyptus on the tables mixed with candles.

We wanted somewhere quintessentially Scottish and Castle Culcreuch took our breath away, it has everything, the grounds, the loch, the rolling hills, the incredible castle, the roaring log fire and plenty of room for all who wanted to stay there.

We also wanted to create an atmosphere that was relaxed and fun, and wanted to use the different spaces the castle provided to mix reception drinks with games, we also provided colouring book for the kids and blowing bubbles for the adults and kids.

Even though I’m not Scottish per se, though my family name Graham is and we have our own tartan. Our colour scheme was based around the white, dark navy and dark green of the Graham tartan.

Maureen knew exactly what she wanted but couldn’t find it in months of dress shopping. She uses a local seamstress occasionally to make skirts for work and decided she would have a go at designing her own dress so that she had something very personal to her and unique in its style.

She wanted the dress to be in pieces, mixing the classic wedding silk skirt with a more modern silhouette to the top, mixing lace and silk.

I wore a dark navy suit from Hawkes and Curtis in an Italian cut style as I wanted to be quite classic, but did want tails. My suits for myself and my groomsmen matched the Graham tartan colour scheme with dark navy suits, green ties for the groomsmen and a white tie for me.

The bridesmaids' outfits were from Reiss and the style was very much to mimic the wild flowers we had chosen as the bouquets.

We had white wild flowers in our bouquets, we wanted them to be natural and in keeping with the Scottish country aesthetic, whilst the white matched the colour scheme. My buttonhole was a Scottish thistle - it had to be, didn’t it?

The drinks reception was at Castle Culcreuch, we changed their usual procedure and did this in the courtyard, which we decorated with festoon lighting.

We then had several candles across the tables and the venue to remove any overhead lighting and make it feel more atmospheric and emphasise the castle brick. We also placed lanterns outside the venue and draped white lighting on the back of the dancefloor and festoon lighting in the courtyard to bring the venue to life.

The tables were decorated with eucalyptus (again in a natural style) alongside the candles. We numbered them 1-10, with images of Mo and I when we were one-year-old on Table 1, two-years-old on Table 2 and so forth. 

Three Sister’s Bake a local firm to Fintry created our cake and we wanted it to fit the Scottish countryside, topped with fresh fruit and being semi naked. We also wanted two different flavours, traditional Victoria sponge and salted caramel, which made up the two cakes.

We had Lego figurines of ourselves for our cake decorations and rosemary with twine on each place setting.

In terms of the the guys from the stag do also had personalised beer mats on their place setting created by the Best Men.

The favours were homemade tablet (a Scottish tradition created by Mo’s aunt) in a small box with PG and Mo written on it.

Our memories of the day are very much linked to our memories of the entire build-up to the wedding! While taking part in a military fitness class in January Maureen broke her ankle in two places, requiring surgery with screws and a metal plate put into her ankle. On crutches and in plaster for six weeks before moving to crutches and a boot, Maureen only began moving without crutches in May, one month before the wedding. Needless to say it took intensive physio for Maureen to be able to walk down the aisle and some good flat shoes in order to complete the first dance!

Our whole build-up to the day was really dominated by this so the relief and happiness felt that it didn’t end up affecting the day was amazing. Oh - and the Scottish weather turning from rainy to glorious sunshine on the day – we were so lucky!

As I drove back from the church to the wedding reception, Mo and I spotted an ice cream truck by the side of the road. I stopped the car and we shared an ice cream looking across the hills – it was a really special moment – our photographer spotted us and took some pictures too.
