Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's wedding cake - recreated!

Written by Katie Byrne, published 30th oct 2017

Iconic cookery school Le Cordon Bleu has recreated the wedding cake chosen by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip for their 1947 nuptials.

The breathtaking bake was brought to life as part of the celebrations surrounding the royal couple's 70th wedding anniversary.

The cake will have a starring role in ITV documentary A Very Royal Wedding, which will air tonight on ITV.

Le Cordeon Bleu's finest pastry chefs worked on the recreation of the nine-foot tall wedding cake, which was constructed from traditional fruit cake and adorned in white royal icing. Once completed, the cake weighed 500lb - the same weight as the iconic 1947 design.

Speaking about working on the cake, Head Pâtisserie Chef Julie Walsh said: "It was truly an honour to be asked to replicate this incredible cake. The project had its challenges due to the sheer size and scale of the cake".

She added: "Even from the very first stages, to bake a cake of this size was immense. Specially designed tins were produced to support the cake as it baked. Every detail had to be hand drawn to form a template as no original existed, which was then piped to ensure each tier exactly replicated the original royal iced wedding cake. The small team spent hundreds of hours piping and modelled every meticulous detail by hand based on the original photographs available".

Tiers of the cake will be given to pensioners at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, as well as a variety of other nursing homes and charities - the top tier will be given to the Queen and Prince Philip as a gift for them to enjoy on their wedding anniversary on November 20.
