Watched the film? Not watched the film? Regardless - there's a rather gorgeous wedding scene you need to know about...
Granted, their romance isn't the most typical of fairy tales: the letters 'BDSM' rarely feature in the most classic of love stories, after all. However, whether you adore or abhor the Fifty Shades franchise, we bet you'll be just a little bit curious about Anastasia and Christian's wedding day. (Hey - no judgement here.)
Taking place within the first 10 minutes of the movie - and setting the scene for the breathless whirlwind of drama that's about to unfold - Christian and Ana's wedding is every bit as gorgeous and glamorous as you might expect. Elegant, breezy and with an angelic palette of whites and creams (nope, not a nipple clamp in sight - and turns out the Greys aren't really into hessian, either), here's everything you need to know about the on-screen celebration...
#1 Ana's dress was designed by an iconic couturier
Throughout the Fifty Shades series, we've watched Ana's style evolve from slightly-awkward girl to power-dressing woman - so naturally, her wedding dress was going to have to be pretty special to match her own personal tastes. And boy, did it deliver. Ana's off-the-shoulder lace-trimmed bridal gown was created by designer Monique Lhuillier (browse some of Monqiue's 2018 bridal designs here; she's also a firm red carpet favourite with the A-list).
Monique was previously enlisted to design the silky gown and feathered cape Ana wore for the masked ball in Fifty Shades Darker, so it was little surprise to discover the celebrated couturier had been asked by the film's lead costume designer, Shay Cunliffe, to create Ana's bridal gown, too. It didn't just end with the wedding dress, by the way; according to reports, Monique and her team also wore the bridal outfits worn by other key characters, including Maid of Honour Kate and Christian's mother, too.
Featuring an illusion back, and, most swoonily of all, full-length sleeves, the wedding gown is timeless. The perfect blend of daring and demure, with sheer panels flirting with that full-length skirt, the gown encapsulates Ana's personality and relationship with Christian perfectly. Speaking to ELLE about the gown, actress Dakota Johnson revealed she had to attend various fittings for the bespoke creation, adding: "it felt like an actual costume—it didn’t feel like 'my clothes' at all".
#2 Ana and Christian swapped their vows in front of a flower wall
So on trend, guys! Naturally, the wedding of a fictional billionaire (trillionaire? Zillionare? Who knows?) will always look a little different from what the average person has saved to their Pinterest board - but no less, there's inspiration to be drawn from the peachy-white blooms the couple swapped their vows in front of. In keeping with the venue's light and airy feel, dozens and dozens of custom-made light fittings were hung from the ceiling of the country club wedding, emphasising the crisp beauty of the blooms.
And it didn't end with the wall: according to props master David Dowling, Ana's fragrant bridal bouquet featured a luscious combination of peonies, blush roses and hydrangeas. As well as that, blossom-adorned trees also decorated the edges of the venue, adding to the enchanted feel of the celebration. Dreamy!
#3 Yes, we want to go on that honeymoon
The newlyweds hopped on their jet ("You own a private plane?" asks Ana. At this stage, why is she surprised? "We own a private plane," counters Christian) and flew to Europe for their luxurious honeymoon. The first destination? The capital of love, naturally; a heady few days in Paris, spent scampering around galleries and museums, cycling in unison arounds the rues and rolling between the sheets of the city's finest five-star hotels. For a splash of ooh-la-la realism, the couple even get caught in a burst of torrential rain on their way to dinner.
After that? The South of France, for beachside relaxation and topless sunbathing. Well, almost. (If you've seen the film, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.) The idyllic getaway was brought to an abrupt end when they were informed of arson at Grey Enterprises HQ - a hint, perhaps, that the villainous Jack Hyde might just be back on the scene...
