Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux met up on Valentine's Day before deciding to announce their split, according to sources.
"They had been living separately for the last several months," a source told E! News yesterday. "He has been in New York the last several weeks getting on with his life. He flew back to L.A. late on Valentine's Day and met up with Jen at a mutually-decided-on location. Justin very much wanted to release a statement so that he doesn't have to hide or live a lie. He wants to move on with his life and be out in the open."
Another source told E! that Jennifer and Justin 'fell in love hard and fast and yet they were never really suited to one another. He was a New York hipster that loved the alternative lifestyle and Jennifer was living a much more reclusive life when they first started to fall in love'.
The couple reportedly went on a make-or-break holiday with friends to Cabo San Lucas in a 'last-ditch' bid to make their relationship work.
Despite the relationship break-down, the pair 'still have so much love and respect for one another', another insider confirmed.

Some unexpected news this morning: Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have announced their split.
The couple, who announced their engagement in 2012 and celebrated their second wedding anniversary last summer, said the decision to go their seperate ways was 'mutual and lovingly made'.
A full statement, released by representative Stephen Huvane, said: "In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation. This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship. Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else's fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another".
The couple were last photographed together on 1 January, with Justin noticeably absent from photos shared of Jen's recent 49th birthday party.
The split will come as a shock to many, with the couple's marriage seemingly one of the strongest in Hollywood. Just last spring, Justin told United Airlines' Rhapsody magazine: "Marriage makes the small things much smaller and the big things small. You have an ally. It's good to have someone have your back".
Jennifer and Justin tied the knot in a super-intimate celebration held at their Bel-Air mansion back in summer 2015, with guests including Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and John Krasinski in attendance. Talkshow superstar Jimmy Kimmel officiated, whilst the happy couple and their guests tucked into a wedding cake that featured Muppets toppers.
