Q&A: Flo and Percy

Q&A: Flo and Percy

Written by Katie Byrne

Kirstie Taylor, designer at Flo & Percy, shares her top tips for picking your big-day accessories

What factors should a bride consider when choosing her wedding accessories?

When choosing jewellery and or a hair accessory, the bride should consider how much detail, beading and so on is in her dress and try to compliment it. A heavily beaded dress may need no jewellery beyond a headpiece, which will be far enough away not to clash.

A bride should also consider her chosen hairstyle and what kind of accessory will suit the hairstyle, comb, headband or pins.

Why should a bride give her bridal accessories thought?

The right accessory will really complete the look. Don’t spend a fortune on the dress and then cheapen it with a poor quality accessory! It is also important to remember that a family member will be more likely to wear your hair accessory or jewellery again rather than your dress.

Are you noticing any trends in bridal accessories/jewellery?

Our brides are loving our 'Wilderness' forehead band that we made for Una Healy from The Saturdays to compliment her Claire Pettibone dress. The bohemian style of forehead bands is really popular with our brides at the moment.

What should a bride consider when picking her hair pieces? Are there certain hair styles that do/don't work with accessories better than others?

We offer a huge choice of hair accessories, over 100 designs. One of the most common mistakes is a bride who has a very structured hair style in mind and wants to team it with bohemian forehead piece, they look much better with a looser relaxed hair style.

Also, it is important to consider face shape - for example, a long face will not suit a classical tiara with a centre peak. We are here on-hand to give advice and like to speak to all our brides individually, hence why we have no shopping cart facility on our website. We want to ensure everyone makes the right choice for them.

Is there such a thing as too many accessories? Is a bride better to pick a couple of timeless pieces, or does it not matter?

Yes - less is always more! I suggest just a headpiece and if you have to wear other jewellery keep it minimal.

What one staple accessory should every bride wear?

We think a headpiece is important. It’s bridal and will look great in the photos, you don’t get many opportunities in life to wear something glamorous in your hair!

How does the Flo & Percy bespoke service work?

We only take on a small amount of bespoke work a year as we give an exceptional service and it takes a lot of time. Once we have confirmed availability we ask a lot of questions and hear everything about the wedding - the most important factors are the dress, proposed hair style and shape of face.

The more information the better, especially as we don’t often get to meet the bride. We then individually source original vintage materials to make up three designs for the bride to choose from; when she has chosen we perfect the design to her choice. The bride ends up with something totally unique and one off that can’t be reproduced and for her to treasure forever.
