Honeymoon guide: Nevis island, West Indies

Honeymoon guide: Nevis island, West Indies

Written by Katie Byrne

Find the sweet taste of old-fashioned luxury and endless lush greenery at this 18th century sugar plantation on Nevis island in the West Indies

Not many honeymoon destinations can boast sun, sand, sea, mountain and rainforest, but the perfect positioning of the Montpelier Plantation & Beach isn’t all that makes it unusual. The boutique hideaway, nestled in the hills of the peaceful and pretty island of Nevis, quite literally sits in the heart of the old Caribbean and right on the lap of luxury.

So prepare for pure indulgence, mouth-watering menus and ridiculously romantic activities, all in the name of love...

When you check into this renovated sugar plantation you’ll be captivated by the endless lush greenery which offers views of the famous Nevis Peak – the volcano is reported to be active but hasn’t erupted since prehistoric times. The natural beauty of the landscape is reflected in each of the 19 beautifully decorated rooms.

Book into the resort’s split-level Garden Suite and enjoy the king-size bed complete with sitting room, rainfall shower (stocked with Elemis treats, of course) and private outdoor gazebo for much needed rest and relaxation. Or sample the private two-bedroom Tamarind Villa which boasts its own plunge pool and sun deck.

Ease yourself in by taking a stroll through the lush grounds of the resort, stopping all the while to watch the monkeys in their habitat. Break a sweat playing tennis or swimming lengths in the pool, or book a private yoga session and indulge in a spot of pampering in the spa.

If you opt for the latter, you must sample Montpelier’s signature treatment, a mango butter and coconut oil massage (from £65). Soak up the rays in a private cabana at the resort’s picture-postcard beach just a few minutes’ drive away (via private transfer) or take a day trip on a catamaran to neighbouring St Kitts, where you can chill out on the sun-drenched beaches.

It’s difficult to miss the natural beauty of the island, but there are many ways to ensure you see it in its clearest light. Why not book a romantic picnic lunch and take a tour along the only road around the island? Swap your flip flops for hiking boots and head through the rainforest towards Nevis Peak with Nevis Adventure Tours.

Discover The Source, a waterfall which is the island’s main source of water, before heading for a dip in the ancient, healing hot spring baths. Finally, enjoy a little island time with a barbecue at The Yachtsman Grill.

The nightlife on Nevis is as relaxing and chilled as the long, hazy days, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t fun to be had. Sign up for a mixology lesson and relax with a pre-dinner mango rum cocktail at Indigo, the resort’s pool bar and restaurant.

Or, surprise your new husband with a candlelit dinner in the Mill Privée, a 300-year-old converted sugar mill. Finish each blissful evening with a nightcap in the Great Room. Just like Robinson Crusoe, you won’t want to leave.

Montpelier Plantation & Beach offers seven nights from £1,399 per person based on two adults sharing a Premier Room. Price includes bed and breakfast and complimentary afternoon tea. Book through Prestige Caribbean (0208 994 2244). Price also includes economy flights with British Airways from Gatwick to St Kitts and airport transfers. For more information about Montpelier Plantation & Beach, visit
